It was a weekend to remember for BMW (and – by association – for Cobra Seats) at the latest British Touring Car Championship round at Knockhill.
Jake Hill was fastest in qualifying and converted his pole position to a win in race one before going on to finish second in races two and three to claim his best weekend to date in the BTCC. Meanwhile George Gamble claimed his maiden victory in race three … and Colin Turkington ended the weekend at the top of the standings in one of the closest seasons we can remember.
If it were a film script you wouldn’t believe it, but in typical BTCC style the two drivers whose participation at Croft was in doubt following their massive accident at Oulton Park just two weeks ago bounced back to take the headlines for all the right reasons.
Following the 40 G-force accident which rendered his 2022 car unusable for this meeting, the team at West Surrey Racing worked day and night to adapt Turkington’s 2019 title-winning BMW 330e to comply with this year’s regulations (no small task, since the hybrid era cars are significantly different to their predecessors). Following what Turkington describes as “the first big shunt of his career” Colin admits that his first outing on the track was somewhat tentative: But you can’t keep a four- time British Touring Car Champion down and towards the end of the session Turkington delivered a new Croft BTCC qualifying lap record.
On a day when drivers using Cobra seats claimed fastest lap in qualifying and then claimed all three victories with a double for Tom Ingram and a last race win for Stephen Jelley, it was the image of Jelley’s teammate Colin Turkington ploughing in to a “head on” collision with Dan Lloyd that will live in the memory.
If ever there was proof of the benefits of the years of experience and hours and hours of product development and rigorous testing that goes into every Cobra seat – and the vital importance of ensuring that a seat fits perfectly - it was the fact that Colin walked away complaining of nothing more than a sore neck.
